1:1 Agendas

1:1s are for the report’s topics first: growth, blockers, feedback, and relationship — not a status meeting that should be a doc.

Structure (30–45 min)

# 1:1 — <names> — <date>

## Their topics (first)
- …

## Your topics
- …

## Feedback (both directions)
- …

## Career / growth
- …

## Action items
- …

Rules

  1. Status updates → written async unless blocking.
  2. Psychological safety: hard topics with care, not ambush HR processes you’re not authorized to run.
  3. Recurring themes get tracked actions.
  4. Prep questions beat free-form silence.
  5. Notes private by default; share actions explicitly.
  6. Canceling repeatedly is a signal — surface it.

Edge cases

  • New hire 1:1s: more context and expectations.
  • Skip-levels: no undermining direct manager; gather themes.
  • Performance concerns: follow company process; document facts.
